As Martin Tillman and his wife Anne expect their daughter Penny to come home for Christmas, a bullet turns the holiday cheer into tragedy. To cope with the awful situation, Martin decides to track down the gun's journey from owner to owner until the killer is exposed. American Gun explores the American fascination with handguns in similar ways to Michael Moore's documentary Bowling for Columbine. But instead of challenging authorities, the focus is kept on an individual level. Director Alan Jacobs highlights Martin's own childhood interest in pistols, and the way he has to come to terms with it, while researching the death of his daughter as well as tracing his own grief to its origins. Veteran James Coburn is an ingenious casting choice in the role of Martin. His coarse face and rugged appearance recollects his old war movie and western protagonists. But here, his performance also reflects sorrow, agony and religious redemption in ways atypical of his usual characters and the effect is truly dynamic. JOHAN LINDQVIST
