Ambivalent Future

Ambivalent Future

av Kenjiro Fujii

Kyoshi Kurosawa’s Bright Future, in the Stockholm
International Film Festival’s Asian Images-section this year,
is a truly original tale of friendship, father-son-relations and
bright red lethally poisonous jellyfi shes that invades Tokyo’s
river. It’s a vital depiction of bored youth and how fate
sometimes gets in the way of the future where the young
fi lmmaker plays with lights and shadows, creating a stun-
ningly beautiful fi lm. All in pale colours shot on DV. Of course
it deserves this – a companion in form of an interesting
honest documentary. Kenjiro Fujii has followed Kyoshi
Kurosawa closely around during the fi lmmaking, trying to
build an intimate relationship with the somewhat shy and
not very verbal director. Slowly, slowly he succeeds. And in
the end his efforts result in a soft spoken discussion about
Kurosawa’s approach to, and refusal to see any limitations
with, the aesthetic of DV.
