The matador of Spanish kitsch, Pedro Almodovar brightens up the silver-screen for the 13th time with a lively portrait of a colourful and deeply-layered Spain. Todosobre mi madre (All About My Mother) is a film about sorrow and wanting, about loneliness and longing. At the same time there is incredible warmth and many comical situations. Most of these are brought on by Antonia San Juan, in the role of a transvestite prostitute. The pulsating Madrid is an important part of Almodovar's films and the opening of this film takes place there. Later, the film's main character, Manuela (Cecilia Roth) goes to Barcelona after her son has died in a car crash. The aim is to find the father, who has lived in ignorance of the existence of his son. With strong brush strokes Almodovar paints the emotional story of a woman who has lost her son but finds new meaning to life through relics of the past. Frustrated women, transvestites, prostitutes, junkies, a saintly nun and the good mother - that more or less sums up the list of characters. Almodovar has as always made use of a brilliant ensemble of actors - together they create enormously intense scenes. Todo sobre mi madre is full of references to the history of film. A Streetcar Named Desire is performed as a play, Cassavete's Opening Night is a source of inspiration and the film title comes from All About Eve. The film is a celebration of Woman and the story is filled with independent, energetic men but also lonely women. It is a pleasure to see that this spiritual auteur is back on top form. Todo sobre mi madre has great depth, but is at the same time a very entertaining and positive film.
