Bobby is brain damaged after a traffic accident in his childhood. Overprotected by his mother, he has not as a 24-year old left the child stage. When his mother dies he is left in the care of his dreaded stepfather. The Fat, as Bobby calls him, tries to force his step-son to hand over his inheritance. Bobby refuses and runs away. After a while he runs into Mr. Summers, who sees it as his mission in life to bury animals that have been run over by cars. They band together and a happy period starts for Bobby. But the worry that The Fat will find him is still there.
All the Little Animals is based on the novel by Walker Hamilton. It is a story with classic fairy tale themes: the struggle between good and evi I, the mean stepparent whose evil spirit breaks out in full bloom after the good biological parent is out of the way, the weak and helpless who gradually grows stronger unti I he has reached a state of independence.
There has been talk of a new British wave of film and Thomas says that there may be something behind that. It is easier to get a film produced today, than it was when he started in the business during the 70's.
One has gotten used to the English producing sober costume dramas or portraying unglamorous people in run down industrial towns, but All the Little Animals deviates from these strong trad itions. Thomas tells a fairy tale - for adults.
It is visually a rich film. The cold, bluish environment of Bobby's home is contrasted by the charming cabin of Mr. Summers and the fabulous forest that surround it. It is in the beautiful landscape pictures that one can sense that Thomas has taken impression from his cooperation with Bertolucci.
This is a first film, but in the solid and well-crafted realization one finds a director who is very familiar with the medium.
