Obnoxious office man Steve returns home from work on his birthday expecting a big surprise party. But entering the dark domains of his suburban quarters, all he finds is emptiness. No functioning lights, the window shutters closed, and the eerie calm send chills down his spine. Where is his family - his wife Alexandra and kids Emma and Sam? The answers may be hidden in the videotape that he finds in the basement. It reads ''Play me''.
Bad Boy Bubby-director Rolf de Heer returns to the dark privacies of small town suburbia, treating the illusive image ofthe perfect family life. Amidst the fancy facades, alienation and repression are unspoken ingredients in marriage traditions. Alexandra's call to Steve is a universal angry cry on every arbitrary misogynous relationship.
With the thick imagery of Ian Jones, the claustrophobic sound design of James Currie and the magnificent offensiveness of Helen Buday's title role performance, de Heer stakes out his own cinematic territory, right between Michael Haneke and David Cronenberg.
