Oliver Stone's long time fantasy project on the short-lived, legendary Macedonian emperor Alexander finally hit the screen in November 2004, far ahead of the Baz Luhrmann project (allegedly still in process), Once again, Stone has managed to gather an impressive cast led by Irish enfant terrible Colin Farrell as the mythical leader who inherited the world's greatest army and a newly united kingdom when he became king in 336 B.C. Angelina Jolie and Val Kilmer play Queen Olympias and the great King Philip, while Jared Leta portrays Hephaestion, Alexander's best friend and battle commander - and presumed lover. Joining them are Anthony
Hopkins as General Ptolemy and Rosario Dawson as Roxane, Alexander's Bactrian wife. Stone depicts the luminous king's long battle journey from its start in Macedonia through its expansion into Persia and Asia to Alexander's death at the age of 32 (323 B.c.). The vast empire over which Alexander ruled was to dissolve immediately after he was gone, Although right in time after the latest years' fascination for historical battle dramas (Gladiator, Troy), Alexander is a bit of a new tal,e on filmmaking for Stone, and certainly an interesting one for the audience.
