The poor Aladdin falls in love with the sultan's daughter, the princess Jasmin. The sultan has chosen the cruel magician Jafar for his counsellor. He is in search of the magic lamp, and with the help of the captured spirit Genie he wants to secure the throne as well as marry Jasmin. Aladdin would do anything to win Jasmin. He has the cunning monkey Abu as his helper and an unusually talented flying carpet. When Aladdin instead of Jafar finds the oil lamp and rubs out the genie his problems appear to be solved.
COMMENTARY
Aladdin is in a way a step back for Walt Disney Pictures. It is an old traditional tale taken from Arabian Nights. The story about Aladdin and His Magic Lamp goes back to 850 A.D., but the most common version was written down by Antoine Galland in the 18th century. Galland adapted the original tale to fit his own time.
This is a tradition visible throughout Disney's adaptions and classical tales for the screen.
Details such as the flying carpet in Aladdin are, unlike in other Disney productions, computer animated. By means of Computer Generated Imagery the animators at Disney have created a three-dimensional illusion within a two-dimensional medium.
The thought behind Aladdin, and other Disney movies, is that a movie should be felt - physically as well as psychologically.
There is an unusally large dose of sex appeal in Aladdin. Aladdin himself is a cartoon verison of a modern male movie hero. The princess Jasmin has the shape of an hour-glass. Princess Jasmin moreover reveals her belly button, the first belly button ever to be seen in a Disney movie. But Aladdin is without nipples; that would apparently be taking things one step too far.
A few devices have been used by Disney to heighten the effects. There are few straight lines in the movie and the color blue symbolizes goodness, while red symbolizes evil. Please notice four inside jokes in tile movie. One of the animals which the sultan balances is the beast from The Beauty and the Beast. But do you recognize the crab from The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio 01' Goofy's ears?
You will find them all in Aladdin. ':' Daniel Atterbom
