Thirty years have passed since World War III. The year is 2019 (the same year Blade Runner) ,Japan is run by the military and the rebui It Tokyo is dominated
by rivaling motorcycle gangs. The leader of one of these gangs tries to rescue his friend Tetsuo, who has supernatural powers, from a secret government project. Down the road he is confronted with antigovernment activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and powerful military leaders. When premiering, Akira was the most expensive animated film ever in Japan.
