In addition to Agitator, another Takashi Miike film is being screened at the Stockholm International Film Festival this year (Dead or Alive 3: Final. But together these two films are only a small part of his complete production last year - in all he has directed seven films, of which Visitor Q, Ichi - The Killer and The Guys from Paradise were screened at last year's festival. Miike himself makes a rare cameo appearance as a mad punisher in the beginning of this two-and-a-half-hour ode to yakuza nihilism. His action starts a chain reaction of violence resulting in an unstoppable snowball effect of revenge and deceit. Although using his specific control over rhythm and alternating outbreaks of violence, Miike is unusually restrained in terms of explosions. Still, fans of the director will recognize the quarky humour, the sometimes bloody and cruel, humorous and eventually moving ingredients ending in an unexpected anticlimax. An epic and maybe slightly more traditional film, Agitator is a fabulous depiction of yakuza gangland fighting, and another proof of Miike's ability to master different genres.
