In a not-too-distant future the ultra-addictive substance “D” is flooding the streets. Undercover narcotic police officer Bob Arctor sets out to infiltrate a hippie-commune, but becomes addicted to the drug. His mind erodes into schizophrenia and he shortly abandons normal existence. A Scanner Darkly is the latest in a long line of Philip K Dick novels being interpreted into movies, of which Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner might be the most well-known. This semi-animated dystopian tale focuses on existences caught in a nightmarish world where human relations all stand aside for the psychological effects of substance abuse. Director Richard Linklater continues to amaze us with his very personal imagery. This time using Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Woody Harrelson and Robert Downey Jr to their fullest potential, making this extraordinary film an instant cult movie.LUKAS ECKESKOG
