The French court in the middle of the 17th century. During the years between childhood and late adolescence Louis, the royal child, is reared politically, morally, religiously and sexually to become a leader, a man of influence. He is thrown head first into court intrigues and on to the battlefield. The road to power is not without pain and he has
to learn to find his identity as a king. The boy Louis grows up and becomes a man, Europe's ''Sun King'', whom the whole world revolves around.
COMMENTARY
Louis the XIV was 13 years old in 1651 when he obtained the power from his mother. His power was to become the most authoritarian and grandiose the world had ever seen, with the people, the aristocracy and the church as submissive subjects.
When Louis, The Child King begins, a few years still remain until the date when he is going to ascend the throne. The opposition is there: the aristocracy's uprising against the state's restrictions of their power and freedom.
The young king is still virtually unaware of what the future holds. But on the other hand, the precocious, plump, spoiled future monarch of average intelligence is perfectly aware that he is an important person.
What could have become a stern lecture in history, with names of the French aristocracy flashing by, instead becomes a chronicle of laughter as well as sorrow. Seen from a child's perspective - a child who becomes more and more precocious in
order to be able to shoulder the future role of a king.
Diabolical intrigues, infernal malevolence, an exhilarated sensuality and a richly colored beauty which means that those who like Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing ought to be able to find something to appreciate in Louis, The Child King. ':'
