Keif Alhal

Keif Alhal

av Izidore K. Musallam

Being Saudi Arabia’s first feature film, this comedy-drama has stirred up a lot of controversy, especially in it’s country of origin where cinemas are still banned. Through the eyes of a Saudi middle class family you are given a well-needed insight into a society usually surrounded by myths and prejudices. The ultra-conservative Khaled wants his sister Sahar to marry his ”righteous and God-fearing” friend Waddah. Sahar on the other hand, has no plans what so ever to quit her job as a journalist and seems much more interested in Sultan, a director of experimental theatre and also a close friend of the family. Funded by reform-minded Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and starring Jordan actress Fatima Al-Hawsani, as well as Saudi hot-shot Hisham Abdulrahman, Keif al-hal is something so rare as a feel-good movie with a social awareness. It embodies the tension between moderates and religious extremists in the modern Saudi society, but does so in a refreshingly unorthodox way. DAVID FUKAMACHI REGNFORS
