It is the end of World War I in France. Five desperate men shoot themselves, trying to escape the frontline trenches at the Somme. They survive and as punishment they are left to die a painful and unavoidable death in the middle of the crossfire in no-man's-land, Audrey Tautou plays one of the young men's girlfriends, Mathilde, who has been unable to walk since the age of three. She receives information that leads her to believe that her fiance has in some way managed to flee from his predetermined destiny. This is the starting point of her long, frustrating and sometimes even comic journey, searching for the truth.
A Very Long Engagement is another result of the collaboration between director Jean-Pierre Jeunet and the great actress Tautou, having previously worked together on the celebrated award-winner Amelie from Montmartre. This time they tell a different story about love and the passion, intuition and tenacity of the human heart, but also about the absurdity of war. Everything is beautifully told with expressionistic imagery.
The film is based on an acclaimed novel by SebastienJaprisot.
