This critically acclaimed episode film gives a glimpse into the lives of several American women. Each one of the nine segments aims to explore female experiences, in different modern day environments. The stories reach from prisoner Sandra (Elpida Carillo), who desperately wants to connect with her young daughter, to pregnant Diana (Robin Wright Penn) who confronts her former lover one day at the supermarket. Moral issues are at the centre, with relation problems as the main theme. Told through nine single unbroken takes, the film maintains a realistic approach that highly relies on the actor’s abilities.Rodrigo García, writer and director behind Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her (2000) and Ten Tiny Love Stories (2001), has once again put his woman-centred episodic trademark, to this feature. By connecting the stories, letting characters from one episode reappears in others, the film also bear resemblance to the films of Alejandro González Iñarritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams), who has also worked as the films executive producer. Every actress in Nine Lives won the Bronze Leopard for Best Actress at the Locarno International Film Festival. ARRAM ECKERBOM
