Somewhere in the French countryside, while snow falls more and more impenetrably outside the windows, a brutal murder has been committed. One of eight different glamorous women is guilty of the stabbing but which one? Part ''whodunit'', part musical (each one of the women tries to prove their innocence in a song) and all throughout the bitchy fun, Ozon's latest film is a loving homage to Hollywood's Golden Age. From its lavish costumes and fauxTechnicolor, to the awesome group of French divas he's casted (Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Emmanuelle Beart, Fanny Ardant, Virginie Ledoyen, Ludivine Sagnier and Danielle Darrieux). Huppert steals the show with a wonderful comic performance as the bitter sister Augustine, but the others are a pleasure to watch as well. 8 femmes is a clever and satirical study about womanhood with a touch of black humour. Francois Ozon, the director of Sitcom (1998), Water Drops on Burning Rocks (1999), and Under the Sand (2000), has made a colourful, stylish and at times over the top dark comedy with a musical touch. He's the one to watch in French cinema right now, presenting the auteur material we've been waiting for. Sofie Dahlstedt & Nicolas Debot
