”Accidents are like miracles. Either you believe in them or you don’t.” Our heroine makes a quick decision - she doesn’t believe. The body of her young boyfriend, Sean, has been washed ashore on the bank of the river Thames and his death is classified as an accident. Our heroine is not content with this. In her sudden and unexpected grief she refuses to believe that no other person has a finger in what happened to Sean. From his mate and, it appears later, companion she receives photographs shot during the last hours of Sean’s life. Except for Sean, the pictures show three people: Angel, the young and shady businessman, Andrea the TV-personality and Harry, the M.P. Together they partied all night and eventually left in a car.In order to gain control over the situation the heroine gets a gun and decides to seek out the survivors. Partly to throw light on what really happened on that fateful night, but above all to find out what or who killed Sean.By means of different identities the obsessed heroine approaches Sean’s corrupt, drug dependent and depressed fellow travelers in London’s seedy underworld. However the meetings do not turn out as planned. She is not the only one looking for Angel, Andrea and Harry. The scriptwriter and director Constantine Giannaris makes his feature debut with 3 Steps to Heaven. He has previously made TV- and shortfilms for a predominately gay audience. With this film he is aspiring to put questions of sexuality in a wider and more commercial context. That is why it is probably no coincidence that we find James Fleet from Four Weddings and a Funeral among the cast, here playing the notorious politician Harry who is surrounded by sex scandals.Above all Gianarri wants to tell the story of a woman, which he found frightening enough in itself, and of people who may or may not be too honest towards themselves and the audience. One who is definitely both honest and revealing is Karin Catlidge as the heroine. She is as screamingly funny in the comic situation as she is anxiety-ridden during her process of mourning. True, revenge is never sweet nor satisfying, however she is able to put enough pieces together in the end to understand - even though she finds it difficult to accept. Our heroine will probably never believe in accidents again But she will believe in himself.
