A young Canadian porn actor takes blood from his dying father in order to avoid getting caught in the studio’s mandatory medical tests. A young nun in South Africa realizes that she can only help by going against her faith. And a Chinese blood collector finds out that she has been a part of the problem rather than the solution. Three different degrees of civilisation – one epidemic. 3 Needles is not a film about isolated events as much as it is a closely knit report of the state of the world today. It’s about life and death – or maybe even more, the vortex in between. And without ever mentioning the name of the epidemic, there is no doubt which disease the film deals with. In spite of the extreme seriousness of the topic, Fitzgerald manages to provide some sort of hope, yet in its vaguest sense. And though sending off razor-sharp criticism in the direction of modern capitalist society, where no profit means no aid, this is a truly breathtaking cinematic experience in the classic sense. Shot over the magnificent scenery of three different continents, the story is still always close to home. Beautiful yet haunting, this is a massive eye-opener that speaks with an intimate voice.
