The once so playful, affair between the young lovers Yu and Kei is slowly collapsing. Kei is a broke and unemployed actor, who, while waiting for his big break, searches out theatre projects and practices lines. He spends most of his time, however, smoking. He refuses to acknowledge that there is a conflict, and instead turns away unsympathetically, and glosses things over.
With ”2 Duo” Suwa joins Japan's austere independent school which deals with Asian conditions like alienation and fear of conflict. These themes find their expression in this film through a naked and revealing depiction of the fear of meeting, breaking apart, of hurting and getting hurt; like an exposed dream of being allowed to demand everything, and offer nothing - to desperately grasp hold of the image of happiness and at the same time flee from image of oneself.
