From Carrier pigeons to postal services and 10 Mbit broadband. The means for human to human communication gets more and more sophisticated. Despite this the main characters of the charming 212 by Anthony Ng suffer from accelerated tongue-tiedness. Technology is for some a solution and for others an escape, or as expressed by a yet unknowing Antonio, partly with words, partly with gestures, when an inquiring hand fumbles for him: “Machines are simple, humans are not.”Hope and fear go hand in hand in Ng’s story of some young adult Newyorkers’ hunt for consistency in a world that is so stereotyped, that it therefore gushes of possibilities.212, which is his feature version of his short film Dot Dot Dot, breaths optimism and courage. It’s a brave film, since it belongs to a genre that often cast boring Meg Ryan-like heroines and Hugh Grant-like boys next door. Instead 212 is filled with real people, who normally does not make it to the big screen. Anthony Ng accompanies them trough the willing everyday dramas in the Big Apple. ADOLFO DIAZ LAMPINEN
