Trevor Garfield watches as his workplace is transformed into a shooting range - he is a teacher in a Los Angeles school. The students carry weapons and are constantly at war with each other. The few who actually want to learn something are becoming fewer and fewer, and the angry, alienated and violent students are taking over.
The title is the penal code number for murder in California. ”187” came into being after the scriptwriter had spent a year in the Los Angeles public school system, drawing largely from Yageman's own experiences. With this film, the director depicts a reality that many want to turn a blind eye towards. He is certain that people will be both upset and horrified by the film. At the same time, he wants to stay within the action film genre, only with a deeper content.
This is a film with many big names both on screen and behind the cameras. Samuel L. Jackson is a safe bet. As usual, he plays the tough but very human guy in agitated surrounding, having appeared before in such films as ”Pulp Fiction” and
”A Long Kiss Goodnight”. John Heard is known from ”Before and After” and The ”Pelican Brief”. The Producer is the man behind many films by or with Mel Gibson. The cinematographer has made a number of music videos for, among others, the Rolling Stones.
