ErnstJungerwas born in 1895, served
in two world wars and took, in his authorship, a stand for and against most of the century's political ideologies. His death in February this year received a lot of attention from the cultural circles of Europe.
In the twenties Junger wrote pol iticallampoons which were published in National Socialist publications. When he was offered a seat in the parliament on behalf of the National Socialist party, he turned the offer down, motivati ng it by sayi ng that he'd rather write a good poem than represent 60 000 idiots.
Full of contradictions and change he valued his writing higher than everything else. Topics which interested him was the individual versus the collective, and mankind's existence in a more and more technological world. He was against the thought that the rational ity of work should rule man's whole life. Clips from American, Russian and German films dealing with the new world technology, characterized by a belief in the future,
are cut into the interview.
The documentary is recorded in Jungers home in Wilflingen, which is filled with books and other artefacts, amongst other things beetles which he has collected since the age of nine.
The film about Junger is not only a biography of an interesting cultural personality, but just as much a reflection of our own century. His books and ideas function as a comment on so-called modern man's living conditions. Junger does not prophesy of the next century, other than that it will bring just as many changes for mankind as the invention of writing did.
