Italian Gilbert Proesch met Englishman George Passmore at London’s St Martin’s School of Art in 1967, forming an artistic partnership that holds to this day. Starting their collaboration with performance art in the form of live sculptures, the two have since abandoned the theory of teamwork thinking, wishing to be seen as one single artist. At first struggling for critical acclaim with provocative, religious and homoerotic imagery, they have over the years reached an almost iconic status. With the motto Art for all, Gilbert and George travel the world, giving more exhibitions than most contemporary artists.
Director Julian Cole, originally being one of their models, has followed the two men over 17 years. He’s documented their journeys in Russia and China, as well as their everyday life in East London. With in-depth interviews, Cole manages to find the two individuals behind this unified front. Using old movie clips to help tell the complete story of this four-decade long career, the director shows that Gilbert and George are an artwork on their own.
