Welcome to the cold, dead fields of the Ozrak Mountains, Missouri. A place plagued by poverty, where a crystal meth dealer pays bail with his house as collateral – only problem being that his family still lives there, unaware of their family member’s betrayal. When confronted with the sins of her father, 17-year-old Ree Dolly sets out on a rocky road to find him in a desperate attempt to keep a roof over the heads of her siblings and catatonic mother.
Granik dares to enter dark territories where hesitant directors are eaten alive, armed with a thematic magnifying glass, which she uses to thoroughly examine wrecked family relations and the craving horrors of addiction. Bittersweet exteriors are used to create a panorama of a closed society in a vast landscape. Winter’s Bone is a brave, brutal and utterly beautiful picture.
