The rich and violence-obsessed son of a politician, Roman, meets the hard drinking, anti-social, bad girl Maru at school. The two alienated teenagers immediately find comfort in each other, and in an act of rebellion against adult society, they run away. The young Mexican lovers explore their freedom and the relationship between man and woman, both unifying and confusing to the inexperienced couple. Their escape is a romantic act without any genuine defiance. But when Roman and Maru’s disregard for consequences brings them out of their exodus and back into society, their explorations are not taken kindly to.
Director Gerardo Naranjo has created an excellent adolescence drama with both feet firmly planted in reality. With a healthy glance at past masterpieces in the genre, such as 400 Blows, Zero for Conduct and Pierrot le Fou, the filmmaker has created a strong, emotional cinematic vision refreshingly free of moral pointers.
