The trip from Peking, China, to Moscow, Russia, takes eight days with the world-famous Trans-Siberian Railroad. In this nerve-wrecking thriller, acclaimed director Brad Anderson tells the story of two couples, whose paths involuntarily cross in a small compartment on this cramped train. Initially, the four people have fun together, trading stories and drinking. But it soon becomes clear that none of the travelers are who they seem to be. By the time they find out the truth about each other, it’s too late to get off. This is a journey where everyone is corrupt, or corruptible.
Anderson uses the confined spaces of the train to heighten the suspense. He mixes sweeping exterior shots, with hand-held close-ups from inside the coupé, to slowly create a claustrophobic effect worthy of Hitchcock himself. And with the backdrop, a desolate and snowy landscape, Anderson captures the eerie feel of the lonely Russian countryside. In the end, the feeling of total helplessness is intense.
