This Is England ’86

by Shane Meadows

Ex-skinheads Woody and Lol are about to get married, but Woody chickens out at the ceremony. This triggers an emotional downward spiral for Lol, which is intensified when her once molesting father re-enters her family home. Disillusioned she initiates an affair with Woody’s best friend Milky, but this only leads to despair and alienation. Meanwhile, the other members of the old skinhead gang are trying to cope with problems of their own, growing up at the bottom of the social ladder. Eventually, Lol's abusive home situation brutally strikes down upon one of her friends, with a traumatic aftermath. When things look the darkest, the old skinhead brute Combo enters the scene.

Shane Meadows, along with the entire central cast, returns with a massive four episode TV-series follow up to his highly acclaimed film This is England. The characters have grown up, and the focus is now on the very issues that once made them become skinheads – poverty, friendship, sexual abuse, love and violence. The cinematic style effortlessly floats between situation comedy and sadistic horror, without losing an inch of realism. Some scenes even exceed the original film in terms of vividness.
