Ciro Guerra’s second feature film is an epic journey through the rugged and strikingly beautiful landscape of northern Columbia. The film centers on the aging minstrel Ignacio who, following the recent death of his wife, vows never to play his accordion again. As a result he sets out to return the beloved instrument to his mentor, who, according to local myth, won the accordion in a duel with the devil himself. A young, aspiring musician named Fermín follows the old man in the hopes of becoming his apprentice, in spite of Ignacio very evident displeasure. Together they embark on a journey that will bring them face to face with the enormous diversity of Caribbean culture.
Local folklore inspires the many surprises the odd-couple encounters on their journey, while the film is infused with sounds of traditional Columbian vallenato, a musical style born of farmers and the poor that has since gained wide popular appeal. Shot in in 80 different locations in the Caribbean coastal region, the film’s widescreen compositions are simply awe-inspiring.
