The Walker

The Walker

by Paul Schrader

Carter Paige, son of a well-known senator, works as a “walker”, walking bored senators’wives to dinners at night, acting as their bestfriend during the day. He is highly popular andthe first one to call when it is time for a gameof canasta, some gossip-swapping or when acover-up for a love affair is needed. He lives toplease and amuse the wives with his wittiness, always there to listen, talking about others andnever about himself. But when the job gets himinvolved in a murder story his role is challenged.Doors close around him and he becomes ascapegoat, forcing him to start asking questionsabout who he is. Somewhere below the wives’best friend is an insecure gay man, who wishesto be accepted, complicated relationship on his shoulders.“The Walker” cares less about the corruptionin American politics, than about the corruptrelationships behind it. Paul Schrader pointsout the dark sides of American life. Here, heshows life as ‘supporting wife’ from its lessthan-glamorous side. As one of the wives saysabout marrying for money: “You never get themoney, you just have to watch them”.
