Human suffering and the luscious colors ofnature come together in the fusion that is “TheSun Also Rises”. With a fragmented form builton magic realism and widescreen grandeur, director Jiang Wen weaves together four storiesof betrayal, revenge and consuming desire in thelatter days of the Chinese Cultural Revolutionas six characters intertwine in the machinationsof lust and mystery. Wen originally had HongKong’s own Humphrey Bogart, Tony LeungChiu Wai, in mind for the role of Old Tang buteventually the director chose to play the rolehimself. “The Sun Also Rises” presents a periodof over 20 years of Chinese history in a highlypersonal manner with both absurd and fantasticingredients. The poetic frames make the filma remarkable story of desire and the beautyin snowflakes made from the ashes of burned letters.
