On the streets of El Paso, Texas, under the gazing sun, the young outsider Barlam walks around in limbo. He is asking himself questions like “Where to go? What to do? Why do I feel this way?” Confusion grows, as there is nowhere to go and nobody to turn to. He lives with his sister, whom he is in love with, and her no good, simple-minded boyfriend.
His male peers think that sex may the solution to Barlam’s existential problems. Soon he is lost in a world of drugs and prostitution and finds himself falling deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole. Inner monologues and sexual failures, as well as Barlam’s almost schizophrenic behaviour, make you wonder if the film is based on a long lost David Lynch-script.
Musician Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has written and directed this film, in which he also stars as the lead character. Reality and fantasy blend, leaving you bewildered about what you just saw. In other words, this is American independent production at its best, no doubt about it.
