In South Carolina, 1964, young Lily is haunted by the memory of her mother who died when she was a toddler. In an attempt to compensate, her father hires Rosaleen, a black woman, to act as a stand-in mother. One day, Rosaleen insults a bunch of aggressive racists, and the two are forced to flee town.
They set out to find the place where Lily believes her mother grew up, but ends up on a honey farm where three estranged sisters introduces the child to what it’s like to have a real family. This tearjerking story is based on the bestseller The Secret Life of Bees.
