The Romantics

by Galt Niederhoffer

A wedding brings seven former college friends together in this intimate drama-comedy. Pretty boy Tom and rich girl Lila make up the lucky pair preparing to tie the knot. In a misdirected blow, the bride-to-be has chosen her old rival Laura as her maid of honor. At a particularly decadent pre-marriage party, the friends find themselves falling back into old incestuous routines and pair up for romantic adventures. The groom rekindles an old flame with Laura and the painful aftermath is carefully portrayed, as the characters struggle to come to grip with their relationships.

The Romantics is directed by Galt Niederhoffer and based on her novel with the same title. She successfully visualizes her old story. Shot in handheld hi8 camcorder, every awkward detail is portrayed in intimate, stripped down aesthetics and mercilessly injects the viewer deep under the skin of the movie's libidinous protagonists. The film boasts a star-spangled cast, featuring among others Anna Paquin, Katie Holmes and Elijah Wood.
