Mixing fantasy and comedy with action anddrama, “The Pye-Dog” is not your average HongKong film. Revolving around three charmingoddballs, it deals with the basics in life, likefamily, love and friendship. First there’s Dui,a mob subordinate sent undercover to anelementary school to kidnap the kid of a rivalgangster, who’s returning to the city to assumepower. Then there’s Wang, a non-speaking,semi-bullied boy at the school, who lives alonewith his granny after his mother committedsuicide in grief over her lost husband. Finally, wehave Miss Cheung, a taciturn substitute teacherwho is just filling in. After an adventurous fieldtrip, Dui, Wang and Miss Cheung form a specialbond and engage in the project of setting upthe stage for the school’s Christmas show. Butit doesn’t take long before Dui’s bosses start asking questions.Dirty, raw, beautifully-lit and with color-richscenery, this is a visually exciting directorialdebut.
