The Nines

The Nines

by John August

In the three different stories that intricatelyintertwine to make up “The Nines”, RyanReynolds plays an actor under house arrest,a successful scriptwriter and a game designerwith a car problem. The film starts out with thestory of the troubled actor accidentally settinghis own house on fire while on drugs, causinga public scandal that leads to his arrest. Thehouse is the home of a screenwriter, who’s thelead character in the autobiographical secondstory, which was in large parts improvised bythe actors. Some split-screening later the filmends up in the third part, where the videogamedesigner and his wife run into car trouble deep inthe forest. Together, the three stories challengeeach other’s reality, forming a narrative bothquirky and unsettling. “The Nines” is a cleverand dark riddle that explores the boundaries between creator and creation, actor and role.
