The Last Days of Emma Blank

The Last Days of Emma Blank

by Alex van Warmerdam

THE LAST DAYS OF EMMA BLANK/DE LAATSTE DAGEN VAN EMMA BLANK"The Last Days of Emma Blank" takes place in a world seemingly void of all logic, where the characters outrageous exchanges and bizarre behaviors are treated as perfectly ordinary. Director Alex van Warmerdam even makes an appearance as a dog, but then again anything passes for normal in this black comedy.

Gradually withering away in cancer Ms.Blank still manages to be the terror of the family. Surrounded by friends and family who are all eagerly waiting for her to draw her finale breath, she poses as eccentric millionaires, forcing her husband and daughter to serve as household staff. Additional staff is provided by the extended family. Her tyrannical and eccentric behavior pushes the family beyond the point of indignation and ultimately threatens to incite a small-scale rebellion.

Originally written for the stage, "The Last Days of Emma Blank" takes a charming leap on to the big screen as an oddly compelling and relevant reflection on class and power.
