Making her mainstream acting debut in this not so mainstream, low-budget feature adult film star Sasha Grey plays the upscale Manhattan escort Chelsea. Providing more than a sexual service; she sells a complete romantic relationship: a girlfriend experience. Set in 2008, against the turmoil of the financial crisis in pre-election USA, the films subject is not erotica, but rather commodities trading, as Chelsea tries to ensure a future for herself by charging $2,000 an hour for sexual healing.
Director Steven Soderbergh once again, as in previous films "Traffic", Erin Brockovich and Che, explores the taut line between private, public and professional life from the perspective of a careerists who loses themselves in their work. With cold detachment Soderbergh observes a world of wealth and casually bought luxuries, providing snapshot like views of New York. In combination with the use of largely improvised dialog Sasha Grey's natural comfort in the role of a sex worker, gives the main character, ergo the film, a credibility bordering on that of a documentary.
