The Dead Girl's Feast

by Matheus Nachtergaele

In the remote and isolated regions of upper Amazonas lies a small community, containing a habitant with extraordinary powers. They call him Saint and he’s a young man who is said to have the ability to heal the suffering. In his constant nearness is a family, destined to serve him and forced to deal with the ever-changing mood swings of this holy man. For the past 20 years, the village has been throwing a feast in remembrance of a young girl’s disappearance, coinciding with the date when Saint is said to have performed his first legendary miracle. The culmination of the evening is when the dead girl’s annual message is uttered from a stage in front of a large crowd.

The Dead Girl’s Feast is a vivid, pulsating film, giving an insight into the hectic preparations for this very special day. People from far away travel great distances to witness a dose of magic, and perhaps experience a rare glimpse of happiness. Ultimately, it is also a tale of man’s wish to understand the mysteries of life and death, more often than not through belief in the supernatural and the divine.
