The Crab

by Rona Mark

The main character in this film is without question one of the most unsympathetic characters in the history of cinema. Levi is a sexist, misanthropic and homophobic snob who refuses to use references and footnotes in his doctorial dissertation, thus he is unemployed.

Levi spends most of his time in bars where he does his outmost to wreck the lives of friends and former colleagues. His antisocial behavior may be explained, but hardly excused, by the fact that he suffers from ectrodactyly – or lobster-claw syndrome – for which he was bullied as a child. With agony buried deep inside, he walks around like a Charles Bukowski character in a mumblecore film; spitting and cursing at everything and everyone in his way, accompanied by a single guitar playing the blues.

The sad truth about this resentful character is that his most monstrous trait is not his handicap, but the bitterness it has given rise to.
