In the Japanese coastal town of Taiji somethinghorrible is taking place. Between the whalemuseum and city hall lies a lush national park, and in its middle a hidden cove. Each yearapproximately 23 000 dolphins are captured andslaughtered there. The strings are pulled by thedolphinariums around the world who need afew specimens for their shows while the rest ofthe animals are killed for their meat - a deadlybusiness since their meat is highly toxic on accountof the high levels of mercury it contains.
National Geographic photographer LouiePsihoyos set out for Taiji together with formerFlipper trainer Ric O'Barry, and together theyassembled a team of experts with the solepurpose of exposing the secrets of the cove.
Psihoyos effectively uses the audiovisual mediumas a call to action - and hopefully to make achange. But THE COVE also plays like a fastpacedthriller as its protagonists use hi-techcameras (supplied by the same company thatcreated Jar-Jar Binks for George Lucas) andrisk jail. As director Psihoyos puts it: "Just try todo the story legally."
