Like the DON'T LOOK BACK of rap, THE CARTERtakes an in-depth look at rap artist Lil' Wayneover the course of several months and givesa revealing and spontaneous snapshot. Asdirector Adam Bhala Lough escorts us throughpersonal interviews and onstage performanceswith the eccentric 26-year-old - called by some"the greatest rapper alive" - he brings us acinematic as well as insightful portrait of one ofthis generation's most prolific artists.
Lough obtains a great deal of up-close accessto the artist as the film dives into a haze of potsmoke and cough syrup, and he lets us witnessLil' Wayne's private accounts on sexual affairs andpersonal feuds. While the search for the "real"Lil' Wayne continues, it appears that such a thingmight not even exist. However, THE CARTER isnot a film only for fans of Lil' Wayne's music butalso a reflection on the modern media celebrityand how all-consuming it can be. THE CARTERis an intimate portrait of an impossible person- although an ennobling one.
