The Bengali Detective

by Philip Cox

Picture Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot in a Bollywood-setting. Bengali Detective Rajesh Ji and his miscellaneous crew try to unravel the crimes the police ignore in one of the biggest cities in the world, Calcutta, where 70% of all murders remain unsolved. Their cases include fraud, adultery, poisoning and a triple murder. Detective Ji also tries to support his diabetic wife and hyperactive son. How does he cope with all this? Through dance off course! Rajesh dances to his favorite Bollywood themes, aiming to become a professional dancer. He even persuades his colleagues to enter a TV dance contest, using a professional choreographer.Philip Cox has created a film that evokes the magical aspects of cinema. The issue about fiction and reality—a recurrent theme within the Seventh Art, has in this opus been resolved. Cox respectfully displays the paradoxes in Rajesh' life, explaining their significant role in an absurd world where the camera avoids the tourist’s gaze as well as the abyssal misery. »The Bengali Detective« is a love story of great magnitude.
