After seven years of research, and numerous visits to Cuba and Bolivia, award winning director Steven Soderbergh has completed his most comprehensive work to date: the life and death of revolutionary icon Ernesto "Che" Guevara. The project is divided into two different films, of which this is the first, and the finished production will ultimately be over four and a half hours long.
The Argentine focuses on the actual Cuban Revolution. It follows Guevara, future dictator Fidel Castro and their fellow combatants from the moment they land on the Caribbean island in December 1956, up until the victory over the Batista regime in January 1959.
The Argentine, and its follow-up, Guerilla, were filmed back to back over a vivid 90-day period. Soderbergh, a filmmaker known for huge blockbusters, as well as smaller indie productions, has created a true epic about one of history’s most mythical, and recognizable, characters. Benicio del Toro, who portraits Che himself, was honored with the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival 2008.
