A formerleft wing anti-colonialist and college friend ofPol Pot, Vergès has made a morally ambiguousname representing some of recent history’smost horrifying war criminals. His client listincludes Klaus Barbie (“The Butcher fromLyon”), Slobodan Milosevic and HolocaustdenierRoger Garaudy. Specializing in crimesagainst humanity, Vergès has sued AmnestyInternational and offered to defend SaddamHussein, as well as George Bush “as long ashe would plead guilty”.Veteran filmmaker Barbet Schroeder, who hasworked within French film since assisting Jean-Luc Godard in the 60’s, presents a thoroughand unsettling case against the evasive and charismatic Vergès.
