In a secluded Serbian village, where all men were sent out to fight in World War I, sisters Ognjenka and Mala live together. When they inadvertently kill their town’s sole surviving male, a bedridden and tube fed vegetable, they are forced to leave the village, to return with a new man within three days. Their trip evolves into a phantasmagorical voyage through a bewildering landscape of folklore, eroticism and peculiarities. We are introduced to the King of Charleston, a decadent dandy of Belgrade’s most exquisite lounges, and we meet the Man of Steel, a maladroit human cannonball. The astonishing visuals suggest that we are witnessing a fairytale well out of the ordinary.
Tears for Sale, with its burlesque and colourful aesthetics, has been compared to the works of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, and director Urs Stojanovic has quickly been labelled a hero in his home country of Serbia. Demon composer Shigeru Umebayashi, known for his work on In the Mood for Love, has created the dramatic score.
