Based on a wonder script by Paul Schraderand directed by Martin Scorsese in 1976, thismasterpiece doesn’t need presentation. Sinceits premiere, “Taxi Driver” has been one of themost discussed and honored movies of alltime. Lonely Vietnam vet Travis Bickle driveshis yellow cab around the mean streets of NewYork City. Taking the long nightshift to cope withhis insomnia, he views a society full of scum through his cab window. After meeting Iris, a12-year-old prostitute, Travis reaches the pointof no return in his disgust and frustration overwhat he has seen. The parallel to Vietnam isclever and not obvious: Someone has to cleanup the streets of New York, and if no one doesit – Travis will. “Taxi Driver” shows a New Yorkfar from today, with Times Square full of streetgirls, freaks, and porno houses. It’s an assailing portrait of a man, who, being systematicallyshut out of society, eventually hits back – “Youtalkin’ to me?”. Robert De Niro is Travis Bickleand “Taxi Driver” is the movie that broughttogether a bunch of young, talented, upcomingfilmmakers at just the right time. Scorsesereceived the Golden Palm in Cannes and fourAcademy nominations for “Taxi Driver”.
