Tale 52 is a hallucinatory clash between a psychological drama and a fantasy thriller. It all starts when Iasonas throws a dinner party and meets the lovely Penelope. She moves in with him and initially everything goes great. But one morning she’s suddenly gone along with all her belongings. Apparently something bad has happened, but the abandoned boyfriend just can’t remember exactly what. Iasonas’ life descends into a nightmarish pit where dreams seem to blend with reality. In his desperate attempts to recover his memories, he only sinks deeper and deeper into delusion.
Director Alexis Alexiou’s has created a labyrinth of madness, and the reconstructive narrative echoes films such as The Butterfly Effect and Memento. Visually the film is shrouded in shadows, with an ever active cinematography of odd angles, focus shifts and double exposures. A suggestive music score crossed with claustrophobic settings creates a true challenge of the senses.
