Every year, hundreds of aspiring baseball talents from the Dominican Republic are drafted onto minor teams in the USA. They hope to gain a reputation and become professionals, but few make it to the major league. This is the story of one of them: Miguel Sugar Santos. The 19-year old wiz kid is recruited by a farm team in Iowa. Confident at first, Sugar’s self-image is fundamentally challenged when he realizes that he is no longer the lone shining star. He struggles to make his living in a culture he doesn’t know with a language he doesn’t speak. But the downward spiral has already begun.
Sugar is a heartfelt and subtle story about one of many unsung talents in the world. With a vivid and evocative sense of observation, the film tells of the dislocation and remoteness that immigration naturally causes. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, whose joint effort Half Nelson was awarded at the Stockholm Film Festival in 2006, show that their talent wasn’t just a stroke of luck.
