Soundtrack for a Revolution

by Bill Guttentag, Dan Sturman

Brought into the film as a privileged audience, we are placed before some of contemporary hip-hop and soul's greatest artists. In intimate environments, they perform classical songs that celebrate the heritage of the American Civil Rights Movement, Malcolm X and freedom of speech. Lyrics are put into historical context by the interviewees - all key players in the Civil Rights Movement. Combined with 16mm footage and animated still photography, "Soundtrack for a Revolution" brings us back to the 60's - a turbulent time, defined by the uprising of a generation brave enough to fight prejudice.

Award-winning directors Bill Guttenberg and Dan Sturman thoroughly explore various audiovisual means of expression in a symbiosis of music performances, talking heads and archival footage. The past and present are intertwined with great creativity, presenting the screen as a remediated reflection of human rights.
