Where the wild strawberries grow, there is aplace for peace and happiness. Elderly professorIsak Borg visits his special place on his way tothe University of Lund where he is to receive anhonorary degree. The journey is double; Isakis also facing the end of his working career, and his fear of death rises along the road. Indreamlike sequences, he looks back on his life.He meets his loved ones and is questioned by asevere school teacher.Bergman creates beautiful scenes andintimate conversations where Isak faces thepaths he has chosen in life, bringing his inneranguish to the surface. Parallels can be drawnto Bergman’s own life, the choices he made andhis relationships, even though Bergman was not quite 40 when the film was made. The strugglewith death and life’s great questions, mixed withGunnar Fischer’s delicate cinematography, makes this one of the most famous – and finest– films Bergman ever made.
