Simon lives in the industrial city of Gothenburg during the 1940’s, the adopted son of a working class couple. He comes from a loving home, but still feels out of place. In school he meets the wealthy, Jewish boy Isak, whose family has fled from Nazi Germany. When Isak faces trouble at home, he seeks comfort from Simon’s family and the two families slowly merge together.»Simon and the Oaks« is based on the Swedish bestseller, with the same name, written by Marianne Fredriksson. This epic, psychological drama is a unique depiction of the Jewish people’s situation in Sweden during World War II. It has taken several years to finish this powerful epos and the result is beautiful. Her direction brings life and tension to this melancholy coming of age story. The film is shown out of competition.
